Strong Partnerships, Strong Communities
June 11, 2026Wilson is at its strongest when our community organizations work together toward a shared purpose. Over the past year, one partnership that continues to grow in meaningful and impactful ways is the collaboration between Wilson Medical Center and the Foundation YMCA of Wilson.
As Director of Growth & Outreach at Wilson Medical Center and a board member of the Foundation YMCA, I have had the unique opportunity to see firsthand how closely our missions align. Both organizations are deeply committed to improving the health and well-being of the people of Wilson and surrounding communities. Together, we recognized an opportunity to better connect residents with accessible resources, trusted education, and supportive environments that promote healthier lifestyles and proactive care.
Healthcare extends far beyond the walls of a hospital. True wellness happens in the places where people live, work, and gather. This includes our homes, workplaces, schools, churches, and community centers. For years, the YMCA has served as a trusted space where individuals and families come together to strengthen their physical, emotional, and social well-being. That made it a natural partner for Wilson Medical Center as we looked for ways to bring health education and preventative care directly into the community.
Over the past twelve months, our organizations have worked side by side to increase awareness of key health concerns while providing practical, hands-on resources. Together, we have hosted breast cancer screening awareness initiatives, heart health education events, and blood pressure screenings in the YMCA lobby. These efforts create approachable opportunities for individuals to ask questions, receive important health information, and engage in conversations about prevention in a comfortable and familiar environment.
One of the most impactful components of our partnership has been the Lunch & Learn series held at the YMCA, open to anyone in the community who wants to take a more active role in their health. At these sessions, healthcare providers have come to the YMCA to cover a wide range of relevant topics, including arthritis management, safe exercise following cardiac events, diabetes education, and stroke awareness. The response has been overwhelmingly positive. Community members are eager for reliable, easy-to-understand health information and appreciate the ability to learn in a welcoming, non-clinical setting. We will continue to host Lunch & Learns throughout the year.
Equally important is the connection our partnership creates between clinical care and long-term wellness. At Wilson Medical Center, we encourage patients, particularly those recovering from orthopedic procedures, to continue strengthening exercises well beyond their time in the hospital. The YMCA provides a safe, supportive environment where individuals can maintain those habits, build endurance, and improve mobility over time. That continuity plays a critical role in recovery and in preventing further health complications.
What makes this collaboration especially meaningful is its focus on prevention, education, and empowerment, not just treatment. By working together, we are helping individuals take ownership of their health before serious medical issues arise. This proactive approach not only improves individual outcomes but also strengthens the overall health of our community.
While we are proud of what has been accomplished over the past year, we believe this is just the beginning. Wilson Medical Center and the Foundation YMCA of Wilson are committed to continuing and expanding this partnership with the goal of reaching more people, addressing more health needs, and finding new ways to serve together.
When healthcare providers and community organizations unite around a common mission, real progress is possible. We are grateful for the opportunity to work alongside the YMCA and remain dedicated to building a healthier, stronger Wilson for years to come.
