Wilson Medical Center Hosts State Representative Dante Pittman for Healthcare Leadership Forum on Mental Health Crisis and House Bill 1104
August 19, 2026Aug. 18, 2026, WILSON, N.C. — Wilson Medical Center hosted North Carolina Rep. Dante Pittman on Friday, Aug. 14, for a roundtable discussion addressing the region and state’s growing mental health crisis and the potential impact of House Bill 1104.
The forum convened a broad cross-section of Wilson Medical Center’s healthcare and clinical leaders, including hospital executives, members of the Board of Trustees, physicians, nursing leaders, case managers, and behavioral health professionals. Together, the group examined the operational and community-wide strain caused by the current Involuntary Commitment (IVC) process and explored solutions offered by House Bill 1104.
During the discussion, hospital leaders presented statistical data and firsthand accounts detailing how the current IVC pipeline creates significant bottlenecks in hospital emergency departments. Patients who come to the emergency room for acute psychiatric distress have stretched local emergency resources, leading to extended wait times and delayed specialized care for individuals in crisis. Hospital leaders illustrated with real-world examples how HB 1104 may help streamline care pathways, ensuring psychiatric patients receive treatment in the most clinically appropriate settings while simultaneously relieving pressure on emergency rooms statewide.
"Our emergency department is often the front door for individuals experiencing acute mental health crises, but an emergency room is rarely the ideal long-term environment for specialized psychiatric healing," said Dr. Jason L. Kimbrell, Chief Executive Officer of Wilson Medical Center. "Hosting Representative Pittman allowed us to share the realities our frontline providers face daily. House Bill 1104 offers a vital legislative framework that will help us decompress our emergency department, reduce unnecessary delays, and ultimately place patients in the care settings best suited to their specific needs."
Pittman, who represents NC House District 24, Wilson and Nash Counties, engaged directly with physicians and clinical staff to discuss how legislative policy can better support local healthcare infrastructure and community behavioral health agencies.
“Addressing North Carolina’s mental health crisis requires collaboration between state lawmakers and the dedicated professionals providing care on the ground every day," said Pittman. "Hearing directly from the physicians, nurses, and leaders at Wilson Medical Center underscores the urgent need to modernize our Involuntary Commitment process. House Bill 1104 represents a meaningful step toward ensuring our healthcare systems have the tools they need to deliver timely, compassionate, and effective care to our most vulnerable residents."
Wilson Medical Center remains committed to working alongside state legislators, local law enforcement, and regional behavioral health partners to advocate for policies that strengthen healthcare delivery and improve patient outcomes across Wilson County and eastern North Carolina.
